Description
Haddington House, located at 27 Sidegate Street in Haddington, was built by Alexander Maitland on the site of a medieval house in the 17th century. This three-storey building features a basement and is designed in an L-plan with a harled exterior and a slated roof. It has a crowstepped gable and a re-entrant octagonal turret stair at the rear. The front of the house includes a balustraded stair with ball finialled dies and an open porch supported by Doric columns, which has a segmental roof. The porch displays the initials of Alexander Maitland and Katherine Cunninghame. In the Regency period, a two-storey bowed section was added near the turret stairs, and an additional lower wing was constructed in the 18th century. Inside, the house boasts fine interior work, including a first-floor room that features a pilastered chimney piece with a painted panel above the mantel.
