Description

This is a long terrace of 29 houses, dating from the 1900s, located on Gosford Road, Cockenzie. The terrace presents a quasi-symmetrical appearance, with half-timbered gabled bays punctuating the facade at regular intervals. The front of the houses is constructed from hammer-faced brown ashlar sandstone, with smoother dressings slightly raised, while the rear elevation is rendered and painted to mimic the appearance of hammer-faced ashlar.

The front (south) elevation displays a sequence of cottage fronts, punctuated by seven prominent two-storey gabled bays, each featuring a bipartite window on each floor and a half-timbered gablehead. The houses between these gabled bays have dormers above the ground floor, arranged in a sequence of 5-7-5-5-5-7-5 bays. Originally, each house had a single bipartite window and a panelled door with a 2-pane fanlight at ground floor level; the arrangement of doors and windows was reversed for each pair of houses. The dormers originally featured bipartite windows with timber mullions and had either swept or half-timbered gableheads.

The east elevation has two asymmetrical windows on the ground floor, with a single window above, the gablehead breaking the eaves. The west elevation has a door located in the front corner angle, corbelled above it to the first floor; two windows are centrally located on the ground floor only. The north elevation features a single bay at each end with a window to the ground floor and a round-headed dormer above. A series of broad, two-bay outshots (14 in total) originally ran along the north face, each with a symmetrical arrangement of two windows and two small windows on the ground floor, with two windows above. A small window and a door are situated in the return angle, complemented by a round-headed dormer above. Intermediate recesses, consisting of two narrow bays, feature two windows on the ground floor and two round-headed dormers above. The property has undergone numerous alterations over time.

The original windows on the front elevation were timber sash and case, with a 6-pane upper and 2-pane lower sash. Rear windows originally featured 8 panes, while dormers had 4 panes. While many windows have been altered or replaced, most retain the original sash and case design.

The roof is a Mansard style, covering both the main terrace and the rear outshots and is punctuated by raised gabled features. It is covered with Welsh slate and features projecting verges and eaves with a billeted timber cornice. Numerous chimney stacks constructed from snecked rubble with plain copes and cans are arranged in an irregular pattern. Shouldered stacks are positioned on each end elevation, with generally a double row of stacks between them, and a few single and larger chimneys.

Low rubble boundary walls, with W saddleback coping to the street, define the site.
