Description

This is a three-storey, late 19th-century commercial building located on the corner of John Finnie Street and Nelson Street in Kilmarnock. The building is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, a band course, and eaves course. The rear elevation is of yellow brick, and there are yellow brick stacks.

The principal western elevation, facing John Finnie Street, has a later, irregular ground floor reflecting modern retail uses. The first four bays incorporate various shop fronts with roll-down shutters, signage, and entrances. Bays seven and eight feature large paired windows and a panelled entrance with a small fanlight above. The upper floors feature regularly placed architraved windows to the first floor, and pilastered windows with recessed aprons above the band course to the second floor. Angle pilasters rise to adjoin the eaves course.

The north elevation, facing Nelson Street, includes a later entrance and an original bipartite window on the ground floor. The first floor has paired windows to the left and a single window to the right, while the second floor has a window to the right, now blind.

The rear eastern elevation is partially concealed by adjacent buildings, with visible expanses of blind brickwork. The southern elevation is a blind gable end adjoining a lower, two-storey building.

Original two-pane timber sash and case windows with horned upper sashes are present on the upper floors, along with some replacement windows. Modern plate glass shop windows and semi-glazed doors are incorporated into the ground floor retail units. The roof is a later replacement with brown concrete tiles and matching ridge tiles. The exterior features painted cast-iron rainwater goods, with some concealed gutters and replacement plastic guttering on the rear. Chimneys are visible on the front and side elevations, constructed of red ashlar and yellow brick, with projecting copes and terracotta or yellow cans.

The ground floor has been modernised to accommodate food outlets, previously operating as a public house. The upper floors were not inspected in 2001.
