Description

1 Carruthers Cottages, located in Johnstone Park, Dumfries, is a building designed by M Purdon Smith and dated 1932. It was constructed for a charitable trust. The structure features a symmetrical, long single-storey row of cottages that face west. The central cottage, which may serve as a caretaker's residence, is slightly taller and set forward, flanked by open porches. The roof is gabled over a pilastered central doorpiece. There are four cottages on either side, with a detached pair of south-facing cottages at the northern end. The exterior is made of snecked bull-faced red ashlar with polished dressings. Each cottage has two-leaf doors and three-light casement windows with iron frames and leaded multi panes. The building includes end stacks, and all roofs have projecting eaves and are covered with graded slates.
