Description
The Murray Arms Hotel is a complex of buildings located on Ann Street in Gatehouse of Fleet. The main building, constructed in the later 18th century, features a regular five-bay design. It is flanked by long, irregular two-storey wings to the north and east, which date from the early 19th century and have undergone later alterations. Additionally, there is a small one-and-a-half storey building known as the Gatehouse, which is reputed to be the earliest structure in Gatehouse of Fleet, dating from the mid-18th century.
The main building of the Murray Arms is two storeys high with a symmetrical five-bay south elevation made of painted rubble and accented with painted smooth rusticated quoins. It has a central pilastered doorpiece with the Murray coat-of-arms above and a partly glazed door. All windows are single light, sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The building features end skews with block skewputts, tall coped end stacks with octagonal cans, and well-graded slated roofs.
To the northwest, there is a two-storey rear wing facing High Street. This long harled wing was originally a four-bay house that has been linked to the main building at the south by a lower two-storey section. The original elevation was lost when it was annexed to the hotel, and a mid-20th century single-storey full-width extension was added to the ground with a balcony above. All windows in this wing are single light with 12-pane sashes, and it has end skews, coped end and axial stacks with octagonal cans, along with slate roofs.
The two-storey east wing, facing Ann Street, is a long five-bay range that adjoins the main building at its northeast angle. It is harled with raised margins and features small windows at the west bay, while the rest are single light (with one bipartite) sash and case windows that have four-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. This wing also has end skews, end stacks, and slate roofs.
The Gatehouse is a detached one-and-a-half storey building located across the courtyard to the east of the Murray Arms. Although it is reputed to have early origins, much of its fabric has been rebuilt and altered, making it appear to date no earlier than the 19th century. It is made of painted rubble, with an enparged vehicular entrance to the right and a single window to the left featuring sash and case four-pane glazing. The attic storey has two small louvered lights, and the building has end skews, coped end stacks, and a steeply pitched slate roof.
The interior of the complex has been significantly altered.
