Description

17 Murray Cottages in Corstorphine, Edinburgh, are a group of ten single-story, semi-detached Arts and Crafts cottages built in 1910-11 by H.F. Kerr, arranged around an oval green. The cottages are predominantly near-rectangular or L-shaped in plan and largely symmetrical, with variations at the northeast corner (numbers 3 and 4) and northwest corner (numbers 17 and 18). The walls are harled brick with sandstone ashlar dressings. A base course is present, with steps leading to the entrance doorways. The cottages feature timber doors with glass panels, and overhanging, bracketed timber eaves.

Numbers 1 and 2 have a two-bay south entrance elevation, featuring two canted oriel windows flanked by roll-moulded doorways, cornices, and keystones. Numbers 3 and 4, also on the south elevation, are four-bay, with a projecting gabled bay to the left containing a canted window and a smaller single window. A doorway to number 3 is located at the re-entrant angle, and number 4 has an entrance at the rear, to the north. Numbers 5 and 6 have a four-bay west entrance elevation; two quadripartite windows are set in an advanced central bay, with doors flanking to the left and right, and painted margins. Canted windows are placed in the recessed bays on the outer left and right. Numbers 7 and 8 also on the west elevation, feature a central, covered porch flanked by two single windows, with an entrance at the re-entrant angle. Canted windows are in the flanking gabled bays. Numbers 9 and 10 possess a four-bay northwest entrance; at the centre, two tripartite windows are flanked by recessed entrances with panels above the doors, and canted oriel windows are at the outer left and right. Numbers 11 and 12 echo the design of numbers 1 and 2, with a two-bay north entrance and roll-moulded doorways with cornices and keystones. Number 12B, on the northeast entrance elevation, has an entrance doorway to the right of centre, a bipartite window to the outer right, and two pairs of bipartite windows to the left. Numbers 13 and 14, on the east elevation, have re-entrant angle entrances at the centre, flanked by two single windows, and canted windows in the flanking gabled bays. Numbers 15 and 16 mirror the arrangement of numbers 5 and 6. Numbers 17 and 18, on the entrance elevation, with number 17 facing south and number 18 facing east, have a central doorway to number 17 with a panel above, a canted oriel window to the right, a tripartite window to the left, and a single window to the outer left, completing with a canted oriel window to number 18. Numbers 19 and 20 replicate the design of numbers 1 and 2, with roll-moulded doorways, cornices, and keystones flanking the bipartite windows. The majority of windows are casement windows with 8 panes. The roofs are a combination of red tiles and grey slate, in various forms including cat slide, piended, gambrel, and bell-cast styles. The stacks are predominantly apex corniced with moulded cans. Some original cast-iron rainwater goods remain. The interior was not inspected in 1997. Boundary walls are constructed of coped sandstone rubble to the north and west, with openings for vehicle and pedestrian access; railings are present to the east, and fencing and hedging to the south.
