Description

3 Gayfield Street in Edinburgh is a double tenement block built in 1888. It is a symmetrical, three-storey structure with ten bays, although the upper floors feature only eight bays on the front elevation. The building is constructed from squared snecked rubble with stugged margins, and coursed rubble is used on the side elevation. It has a base course and an eaves cornice, along with stugged long and short quoins, and exhibits regular fenestration.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a timber-panelled door with a letterbox fanlight located at the third and eighth bays on the ground floor. The upper floors feature close-spaced windows at the second and third bays and the sixth and seventh bays.

The northwest (rear) elevation includes a door at the ground floor in the third and eighth bays, with windows positioned at half-storey on the upper floors.

The glazing consists of a mixture of four-pane and plate glass in timber sash and case windows on the front elevation, while the rear features a mix of twelve-pane and plate glass in similar windows. The building has a pitched roof covered with grey slates, with stone skews and skewputts. There are four wallhead stacks on the front elevation, along with one gablehead stack on the left, one ridge stack in the centre, and one gablehead stack on the right; all stacks are corniced and rendered with circular cans.

At the rear, there is a boundary wall made of random rubble, built around 1800, with occasional brick sections and a flat stone coping.
