24, 26 Cumberland Street, Edinburgh

22 Cumberland Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and basement terraced tenement building designed by Thomas Brown in 1822. It features a total of 44 bays, with a central 28-bay block flanked by two mirrored 8-bay end blocks that are slightly advanced. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, with a channelled finish at the principal floor. There is a band course at both the principal and first floors, a cill course at the second floor, and a cornice with a blocking course at the eaves. The entrance is accessed via cement steps and platts that overhang the basement.

On the south (principal) elevation, the building predominantly showcases six-panel flush-beaded doors, accompanied by plate glass and decorative rectangular fanlights. The eastern end block (Nos 4-10) features a window to the left of centre and a door to the right of centre at the principal floor, flanked by additional doors and pairs of windows. This arrangement is mirrored on the western end block. The central block has an irregular arrangement of windows and doors at the principal floor, while the floors above display regular fenestration. Some basement areas are cement rendered and exhibit a variety of doors and window styles.

The eastern elevation is made of coursed random rubble with droved ashlar dressings, featuring centered windows at all floors, with smaller windows to the right of centre at the principal and first floors. The western elevation also consists of coursed random rubble with droved ashlar dressings, with windows located at the centre right across all floors. The northern elevation was not visible in 1997.

The building is fitted with predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows and has a grey slate M-roof. It includes cast-iron rainwater goods and ridge stacks made of brick, coursed rubble, and harled materials with polished quoins. The gablehead stacks are harled and rubble, coped with circular cans, and the skews are also coped.

The interiors were not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is enclosed by ashlar copes topped with cast-iron railings featuring fleur-de-lis balusters and pineapple finials.
