Description
33 Coates Gardens in Edinburgh is a two-storey building with a basement and attic, constructed between 1871 and 1876 by John Chesser. It features a terrace of two-bay houses, with No 35 having three bays, and includes a bowed corner block for Nos 33 and 35. The exterior is made of polished, channelled sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the basement is finished in droved sandstone. Architectural details include a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, and a cornice over the canted bays. There are string courses and band courses below the eaves at the first floor, along with a cornice and blocking course, and coped skews. The doorpieces are adorned with foliated consoles and stop-chamfered pilasters, with margins around all window openings except at the canted bays.
The front elevation features a doorpiece flanked by narrow lights, with a tripartite window above at the first floor. There is a two-leaf panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight, bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors, and a canted bay with three lights at the left of No 35. The roof has bipartite dormers and a tripartite dormer over the canted bay. The side elevation is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with a window at the outer left of the first floor and stacks at both gablehead and wallhead.
The building has two-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with tile-hung dormers, and coped sandstone ashlar stacks with tall, original octagonal cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods are painted. Additionally, there are spike-headed railings along the street, set in coping, leading to the ashlar steps and entrance platts.
