40 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh

36 Palmerston Place in Edinburgh is a building constructed between 1877 and 1880 by John Chesser. It features three stories with a basement and a terrace of two-bay houses, each with three-light canted bay windows. The exterior is made of polished, channelled sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the basement is finished in droved sandstone ashlar. The building includes a base course, a cill course that forms a cornice at the canted bays on the first and second floors, an eaves course, and a dentilled cornice.

The principal elevation on the northeast side has a central door at the basement level, with a window to the left beneath the entrance platt and a canted bay to the right. The doorpiece features a six-panel timber door flanked by narrow lights and a depressed arch fanlight, all framed in wood. There is an iron-framed balcony above the doorpiece leading to No 42. The upper floors have a single window above the door, with lights on each face of the canted bay to the right.

The windows are fitted with two-pane timber sash and case glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and is piended at the corner, featuring mutual coped sandstone ashlar stacks and skews, tall cylindrical and moulded octagonal cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.

The property includes spiked railings leading to the ashlar steps and entrance platts, set in coping along the street, as well as plain railings at the basement level.
