4 Restalrig Road South, Piershill Housing Scheme, Edinburgh

8 Restalrig Road South is part of a local authority housing scheme designed by Ebenezer James MacRae between 1937 and 1938. This development consists of 47 three- and four-storey tenements, primarily arranged in two linked tapering squares. The buildings feature three-bay canted corners on the corner blocks and regularly spaced slightly advanced gablet-headed bays. A prominent round stair turret is located at the center of the elevation facing Portobello Road. Some of the four-storey blocks have piend roofed dormers.

The construction uses hammer-dressed snecked rubble with ashlar angle quoins and bull-faced lintels and quoins around the windows. Some of the four-storey blocks are harled on the first to third floors. The buildings include a basecourse and cill courses on the rendered blocks. The timber boarded doors have roll moulded surrounds, and some doorways feature roll moulded relieving arches. The fenestration is regular, consisting of single and paired windows.

There is some original 12-pane glazing in the sash and case windows, although many windows are non-traditional. The roofs are a mix of gabled and piended styles, covered with grey Scotch and Welsh slate, and feature ashlar-coped skews. The prominent coped stacks have some clay cans.

The property is enclosed by low coped rubble boundary walls with plain cast iron railings at the front of all tenements.
