47 The Steils, Craiglockhart Poorhouse Infirmary Ward, Greenbank Drive, Edinburgh

21 The Steils is a building located in the Craiglockhart Poorhouse Infirmary Ward on Greenbank Drive, Edinburgh. Designed by George Beattie and Son between 1867 and 1869, with some parts possibly built slightly later, it features a simplified Scots baronial style characterized by strings and crow-stepped gables. The structure is made of squared rubble with ashlar dressings, retains mostly original glazing, and has slate roofs.

The main building is substantial, consisting of a row of five tall, three-storey blocks arranged symmetrically. It may have originally been free-standing, as the existing recessed links are not original. The central block is more decorative and includes an engaged four-storey octagonal entrance tower, which has a sculptured doorway dated 1867 and a facetted steep-pitched roof. The upper windows, which break through the eaves on the outer bays, feature pedimented dormer heads.

At the east end of the site are the ward blocks, comprising three long parallel two-storey blocks. The inner block is shorter, while the two outer blocks are identical. These have a shallow plan and diagonally-set square angle pavilions, all with crow-stepped gables, presenting symmetrical long and short elevations.

Centrally located between the ward blocks is a U-plan block, which is two-storey and has a domestic appearance. It features a bolection-moulded centre doorway, advanced ends, and crow-stepped stair turrets that are recessed on the flanks.

At the west end of the site, there is a house and cottages enclosed within walled gardens. The house is two-storeyed with three bays and an L-plan front, featuring a central entrance. The cottages are arranged symmetrically, with a three-bay range in the centre that is two-storey, flanked by single-storey cottages.
