Description
The Barnton Hotel, located at 562 Queensferry Road in Edinburgh, was designed by George A Lyle in 1895 and has undergone later alterations and additions. This asymmetrical building features two storeys and an attic, originally a villa, and includes barge-boarded dormers and a pagoda tower. It is constructed from squared and snecked stugged cream sandstone with pink ashlar dressings. The eaves are bracketed and barge-boarded, and the building has long and short quoins. The windows have tabbed and chamfered surrounds, with kingposted gables and segmental-arched windows in the attic.
On the principal (south) elevation, there is a modern extension to the outer left. To the left, a recessed gabled bay features a projecting tripartite window on the ground floor with a timber balcony above, and a hood-mould over the tripartite window on the first floor. A four-stage tower is located in the second bay from the left, with an entrance on the ground floor accessed through a modern glazed door in a corniced, moulded surround. This tower has a bracketed pentice roof over a window at the first stage, round-arched windows, and a stone-bracketed balcony with decorative iron railings at the top stage. There is a recessed bay second from the right, which has been extended to the ground floor and includes a tripartite window with a timber balcony above, along with a timber dormer in the attic. The outer right gabled bay features a quadripartite canted window on the ground floor, which is bracketed to a square window on the first floor.
The west elevation has a modern extension to the ground floor on the right. There are two dormers in the attic on the right, with the left one being bipartite. The centre has a projecting gabled bay with a hoodmoulded window on the first floor. To the left, there is a single-storey two-bay section with a finialled polygonal slated corner tower, and a projecting gabled bay on the right with a bipartite window, along with a modern porch in the re-entrant angle.
The east elevation also has modern extensions to the right and to the ground floor on the left. The left section consists of four bays with dormers in the attic.
The north (rear) elevation has its ground floor concealed by later extensions, but the roof-scape with a bracketed gable and attic dormers remains visible.
Inside, the hotel has been much altered, but features stained glass with vignettes in the timber stair area. The windows are predominantly plate glass set in timber sash and case frames. The building has a corniced ridge stack and a grey slate roof, with red tiles at the corners and on the tower, along with decorative terracotta ridge tiles and finials.
