1-2 Grosvenor Gardens, Edinburgh

5 Grosvenor Gardens consists of a three- and four-storey and basement corner block and terrace, built between 1891 and 1895. The initial sections, numbers 1 and 2, were designed by Sydney Mitchell, followed by numbers 3-6 by Belfrage and Carfrae. The building is constructed from coursed, polished sandstone ashlar, with channelled quoins. A base course runs along the exterior, a band course defines the ground floor, cornicing accentuates the canted bays, and a cill course is present on the first and second floors. A substantial cornice and balustrade are features of numbers 1, 2, and 6. Margins are present around the windows, with triangular pediments above the first-floor windows of numbers 1 and 2, and cornices on the first-floor windows of numbers 3-6.

The north elevation showcases a canted bay with windows on all faces extending across the right side of numbers 1 and 2, and a single-story and basement canted bay with a parapet to the left. The entrance to numbers 1 and 2 features a four-panel timber door with a fanlight, flanked by windows, all set within an advanced doorpiece. A single window is positioned above the entrance on the first and second floors. Numbers 3-6 present four two-bay houses, each featuring a three-light canted bay on the left side, encompassing all floors. The doorpieces on numbers 3-6 incorporate a two-leaf panelled timber door surmounted by a fanlight, with further detailing above.

The east elevation, facing Rosebery Crescent, exhibits a three-storey and basement canted bay on the left with windows on all sides. A timber door with a fanlight is positioned in the penultimate bay. Each bay above has a window, and the ground-floor window has a distinctive lugged surround, keystone, and cornice. The right-hand bay's windows are consistent across all floors.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 2 and 3 panes. A concealed roof is present, and wallhead stacks are incorporated into the balustrade of numbers 1 and 2. Numbers 3-6 have coped mutual stacks topped with tall cylindrical cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also a feature. Fleur-de-lys railings are set in coping along the street edge.
