Description
11 Braid Road is a double villa designed by R Rowand Anderson, built between 1889 and 1890. This two-storey and attic building features a cream sandstone exterior, with coursed and squared rubble and polished ashlar dressings at the front, while the rear and sides are made of squared and snecked rubble. The design includes rounded reveals, a moulded cill course at the first floor, an ashlar frieze and eaves cornice, and a base course for the canted windows, which are accented by ashlar mullions.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with two central bays that feature two-storey canted ashlar windows that extend above the eaves, topped by a tall corniced parapet that serves as a balcony for the tripartite timber dormers. These dormers have Queen Anne-style heads with scroll-flanked pedimented panels adorned with carved foliage. The outer bays are recessed and contain plain doorways with panelled doors, each featuring a rectangular swagged panel with an angel head and a scrolled swan-neck pediment above. There are single windows on the first floor.
The north and south elevations have tall shouldered and corniced wallhead stacks at the center, which are linked to the roof. The rear elevation has single windows and pedimented timber dormers.
The villa is fitted with timber sash and case windows, featuring multi-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. The roof is steeply pitched with green slate, complemented by lead flashings. There are two wallhead stacks and a broad transverse stack. A pedimented panelled skewputt is present on the party wall, along with a moulded eaves gutter and gutterheads.
The interior was not seen in 1992. The front of the property is enclosed by a low rubble wall topped with saddleback coping, with later gates added.
