Description

9 Manor Place in Edinburgh is an extensive classical terrace built in 1825 by Robert Brown. The terrace features a unified façade of two- and three-storey townhouses, each with basements and attics, and includes main-door and common stair flats behind, along with later attic additions. The northern corner block is slightly advanced and consists of five bays. The basement area facing the street includes vaulted cellars and retaining walls. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a droved finish at the basement and a channelled finish at the ground floor. The entrance platts oversail the basement, and there is a banded base course and a banded cill course at the first and second floors. The corniced eaves course and stepped, balustraded parapet are notable features of the corner block.

The entrance features plain doorpieces with rectangular fanlights above, while the corner block has a round-arched doorway flanked by narrow sidelights and topped with a radial fanlight. The ground floor of the corner block has round-arched recessed windows, and the first-floor windows are surrounded by moulded architraved surrounds. The corner block's first-floor windows also have architraved and corniced surrounds, with a pedimented window in the centre bay. Cast-iron balconies supported by scrolled brackets adorn the first-floor windows. Box dormers are present on Nos. 3, 7, 9, and 11.

The rear elevation is made of coursed squared rubble, featuring ashlar cills, lintels, and rybats, with some ashlar quoins and roughly regular fenestration. The windows predominantly consist of six-over-nine and twelve-pane timber sash and case designs. The roof has a double pitch M-section covered in grey slates, with a corniced ashlar wallhead and ridge stacks fitted with modern clay cans. Cast-iron railings are placed on sandstone coping stones edging the basement recess facing the street, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the interiors are characterized by plain classical detailing, including some cornicing with mainly foliate designs. Fire surrounds feature broken pediments, and there are some oval internal rooms with detailed plasterwork door surrounds and cornicing.
