Description

St George's Parish Church, located in Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Reid between 1811 and 1814. It was later gutted and reconstructed as a registry office by R Saddler of the Ministry of Public Building and Works from 1964 to 1970. The building features a square plan in a neo-classical style, with the dome positioned at the front and pavilions at each corner. It is constructed from polished cream sandstone ashlar.

A broad flight of steps leads up to a tetrastyle Ionic portico in antis, which supports a balustrade and contains three bays. The central bay features an arched smoked plate glass entrance, while the flanking single bay pavilions include a base course, recessed arches with rectangular windows and oculi, an impost course, blank frieze panels, and a panelled attic storey. The dome is supported by a massive square base and a peristyle drum, with every fourth bay blocked by a niche. The upper section includes a balustrade, oculi, and a fluted frieze, topped by a slender copper-clad ribbed dome, which is crowned by a lantern resembling a Tempietto, featuring a gilded dome and cross.

The side elevations have a pair of large windows at the centre and projecting three-bay pavilions at the rear, which include a tripartite window set in an arched recess flanked by niches. The rear elevation features a projecting three-bay centerpiece with a loading bay at ground level, a Venetian window on the first floor, and a Diocletian window on the second floor.

Inside, there is a two-storey entrance and exhibition hall with a mezzanine reading room at the front, flanked by five floors of storage.
