Description

3 Dundas Street is a terraced tenement building in Edinburgh, designed by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in the early 19th century, with late Victorian additions. It is four storeys high, with a basement and a wallhead attic, and features a seven-bay façade. The exterior is constructed of broached ashlar sandstone, showcasing V-jointed rustication at the principal floor. There are band courses between the basement and principal floor, as well as between the principal and first floors. The second floor has projecting cills and a cornice, while the third floor includes a string course and blocking course. The entrance features ashlar steps and platforms that overhang the basement.

On the west elevation, there is a nine-panel flush-beaded timber common stair door with a rectangular fanlight, centrally located at the principal floor. A slightly advanced pilastered doorpiece is found in the third bay from the left, featuring a single fluted pilaster with a Corinthian capital, a four-panel timber door, and a plate glass rectangular fanlight. To the outer left is a three-bay pilastered and corniced shop front (No 7A, P Clark Thomson & Son) with glazed doors and plate glass windows. There are also a pair of six-panel doors in the third bay from the right, each with plate glass rectangular fanlights, and a two-bay shop front to the right with a recessed glazed door and a plate glass window.

The south and north elevations are part of adjoining terraces, which are detailed in separate listings. The building predominantly features twelve-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate M-roof, and cast-iron rainwater goods. The ridge and gablehead stacks are made of broached ashlar and are coped with circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters. The property is also enclosed by ashlar copes topped with iron railings that have spear-headed balusters.
