Ancillary building no13, Redford cavalry barracks, Colinton Road, Edinburgh

These eleven ancillary buildings were designed by Harry B Measures and built between 1909 and 1915 as part of the Redford cavalry barracks, located on Colinton Road, Edinburgh. They currently serve primarily as stores. The buildings are constructed with either coursed rubble or a rendered finish, often with smooth ashlar margins, although Building 39 features brick elevations. Most have grey graded slates to the roofs, along with raised skews, and a distinctive Dutch gable design.

Building 9 is a rectangular, gabled former stable with a long roof vent and altered window openings. Building 10 is a small, rectangular stable intended for sick horses, featuring a pair of large, boarded timber doors and roof vents. Building 13 is a six-bay former cottage characterised by irregular windows and predominantly six-pane glazing within timber sash and case windows. Four ridge chimney stacks are present.

Buildings 26 and 28 form an L-plan layout, with Building 28 distinguished by a row of high windows and Diocletian windows in its gables. Building 26 has a run of boarded timber doors on its northeast elevation. Building 29 is rectangular and gabled, with a row of high windows, ridge vents, and Diocletian windows on each gable. Building 39 has an irregular plan, incorporating one gabled section and one piended roof section. Some openings have been altered, resulting in a variety of window styles and glazing patterns, including smaller panes.

Building 40 is gabled, with lower sections on the northeast side of the entrance elevation, and displays Diocletian windows within its gables. The entrance door has been altered. Buildings 43 and 44 incorporate enclosed courtyards. Building 43 has a U-plan design and includes an enclosing boundary wall to the northeast, which features a piended roof weighing booth. Building 44 is L-plan with enclosing coped rubble boundary walls to the northeast and northwest, and a variety of window types, including timber sash and case and fixed windows, with a small pane glazing pattern. Inspection of part of the interior of Building 44 in 2016 revealed it to be divided into rooms, with one large brick fire surround featuring a stepped mantelpiece.

Buildings numbered 14, 14a, 27, 67, 71 and 72 are excluded from the listing.
