Description
The Ward Blocks, built around 1918, consist of a group of one- and two-storey red brick gabled barrack buildings. They are arranged on a narrow site on either side of a central access road, featuring regular window arrangements with concrete cills and lintels. Most windows are timber sash and case with small-pane glazing, though many were boarded up in 2006. The buildings have Welsh slate roofs with terracotta ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods, along with some decorative cast-iron street-lamp brackets attached to them.
The barrack building comprises five interconnecting two-storey, eleven-bay accommodation blocks arranged in pairs, with a single-storey service range at the centre. There is a flat-roofed two-storey surgery block at the west end, which has concrete cill courses and lintel bands, and gablehead stacks. Some alterations have been made to this structure.
The officers' ward is a two-storey, ten-bay block with a piend roof, featuring bracketed eaves and a central arched entrance within a gabled porch. It has corniced stacks and two ranges of gabled single-storey service accommodation at the rear. This block is located at the west end of the site, distanced from the other buildings.
The guard room and cell block is a single-storey, three-bay gabled structure with a central door, and it has a flat-roofed cell block adjoining at the rear. The cell interiors remain intact, complete with original doors and beds, and this building is situated at the entrance to the site.
To the south of the access road, behind the guard room, are single-storey gabled ranges that include the latrine, recreation rooms, victualling store, and administration block. The administration block and recreation room feature cast-iron ridge vents.
The boiler house is a single-storey, flat-roofed block with a roughly square plan, topped by a tapered brick chimney at the northeast corner. Its floor level is slightly below ground, with steps leading to a two-leaf timber boarded door on the west elevation and a ramp to a later entrance on the north elevation. Large windows are present on the south and west elevations.
An air raid shelter, built around 1940, is located to the east of the officers' ward. This shelter is shaped like an "S" and is low and grass-covered, with concrete steps leading down to walled-up entrances at each end. It features low, concrete-coped brick ventilator openings, and both entrances are blocked, making interior access impossible.
