Description
51 Ann Street in Edinburgh is a pair of adjoining two-storey, two-bay end terrace townhouses built between 1869 and 1871 in a classical style. The buildings have a prominent tripartite window and the ground falls away to the south, revealing a basement at the rear. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar, featuring a banded base course and a band course at the first floor with a narrow banded cill course above. The corniced eaves course adds to the architectural detail. The doorways are moulded architraved and corniced, with panelled timber doors and fanlights. The right side has bevelled architraved tripartite windows at both the ground and first floors, with a cornice at the ground floor.
The southwest (rear) elevation is made of squared and snecked sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings, displaying regular fenestration. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is double-pitched and piended to the gable, covered with grey slates. Sandstone skews and a moulded skewputt are present on the northwest side. The building features bevelled and corniced ashlar ridge and end stacks with some clay cans, as well as cast-iron rain-water goods. A low wall made of stugged, squared, and snecked stone with droved copes edges the gardens to the street, topped with cast-iron railings that include a decorative cast-iron lamp standard with a large bowl shade.
Inside, the houses feature a classical decorative scheme characterized by intricate plasterwork and large drawing rooms. Decorative cornicing is present throughout, along with some ceiling roses and large marble fireplaces in the principal rooms. The stone stairs are complemented by a well-detailed cast iron balustrade and timber handrail, topped by large cupolas with decorative plasterwork beneath.
