Description
The building is a steading located at Brunstane House on Brunstane Road South in Edinburgh, with a complex construction history. The western range has a late 18th century appearance, possibly dating back even earlier, and forms the core of a larger U-plan steading designed by Robert Brown in 1824. At the center of the north-facing courtyard is an early 19th century hexagonal horsemill, with east-facing steading ranges and Brunstane Farm Cottages to the west, likely also designed by Brown in the early 19th century.
The structure is built of rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring late 18th century dressings with broad margins and rough droving, alongside early 19th century dressings that are stugged with narrow margins. The roofs are slated.
The western range includes a cart shed and a three-bay block to the right, both dating from the late 18th century. The three-bay block was altered into a cottage in the early 19th century, with a vehicular entrance in the north end elevation that has been blocked and replaced with a window, and a door with flanking 12-pane sash and case windows added to the courtyard front during the same period.
The cart shed remains largely unaltered, featuring five segmental-arched cart bays, with the rightmost bay blocked in the 19th century. It has a horizontal timber-framed and astragalled window, and a loft window that has been blocked above the right-hand bay. Adjacent and rear windows still display 9-pane astragalled windows, and the shed has a piend roof. The front area of the western range is setted.
The southern range, which serves as a barn, was built in 1824 and features a piend roof with a central timber vent. There is brick patching, and the wall height has been raised with brick at the rear.
The horsemill is hexagonal with a slated roof and was originally open on all sides, with angle piers dividing wide open bays, although the east side has been bricked up.
Brunstane Farm Cottages consist of a long two-storey range with dormer-headed windows, arranged in a pattern of 2-2-1 on the rear (west/northwest) elevation.
