Description
5 Rothesay Mews is a late 19th century mews terrace consisting of an extensive range of two-storey, roughly two-bay gabled buildings. It is situated on a ground that slopes to the northeast in a cobbled lane. The structure is made of coursed squared and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring long and short rybats and chamfered openings.
The mews includes large rectangular cart-shed openings with timber doors, some of which have glazed upper sections, along with later timber and glazed infill. There are doorways to the right of these openings that have transomed multi-pane fanlights. The first floor has single large windows, including one tripartite window to the northeast of the range, and some former hayloft doors with transomed lights, many of which are now infilled.
The building features a stepped moulded eaves course and a recessed plain rectangular panel at the centre of the gables with moulded margins, topped with alternating triangular and round pediments. Some globe finials with corniced moulded bases are present on the skewputts, along with gablehead chimney stacks that alternate with ball finials at the apexes.
The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The roofs are multiple pitched with lead ridges and grey slates. There are alternating corniced sandstone ashlar gable apex stacks, some with octagonal clay cans. The building also has cast-iron rainwater goods, with additional rainwater channels integrated into the stonework, featuring a small moulded round arched opening beneath the roof valley. Some cast-iron balconies are located at the first floor.
