Description
This building, located at 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, and 23 Shandwick Place in Edinburgh, is an earlier 19th-century structure that was recast in 1880 by Robert Morham, with later alterations. It is a four-storey, nine-bay former terrace of three, three-bay townhouses with shops extending out at the ground floor. The shop surrounds at the principal floor are made of polished granite, while the upper sections feature painted sandstone ashlar with painted dressings.
There is a cill course at the first and second floors, a lintel course at the first floor, a band course below the cornice, and a string course below the cornice between the second and third floors, as well as at the third floor. The first-floor windows have pilasters and a dentil cornice, while the first and second-floor windows have moulded surrounds. The central bipartite windows at the second floor have bracketed balconies, and the third-floor windows feature consoled and finialled segmental pediments, with pilasters marking each three-bay section.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is a two-leaf modern glazed door with a rectangular fanlight above, leading to a pend to the right of centre, and a deep-set modern door to the outer right at the principal floor. The remainder of the principal floor has modern shop fronts. The upper floors are grouped in threes, with regular fenestration at the first floor and bipartite windows with single flanking windows at the second and third floors.
The northeast elevation adjoins the terrace at 7-11 Shandwick Place, while the southwest elevation adjoins the terrace at 25-37 Shandwick Place, which includes The Maitland Hotel. The southeast elevation was not visible in 2000.
The shop windows at the principal floor are complemented by four-pane timber sash and case windows elsewhere. The roof is made of grey slate with coped skews, and there are sandstone, coped, multi-flue ridge and gablehead stacks topped with a full complement of tall cylindrical moulded cans. The building also features cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, there are modern shop fittings at the principal floor, while the remainder of the interior was not seen in 2000.
