12 Belgrave Place, Edinburgh

14 Belgrave Place in Edinburgh is a terrace of townhouses designed by Alex W McNaughton in 1880. The buildings are three stories tall with a basement and feature a classical style. They have a prominent three-light full-height canted bay on the northern side. The exterior is made of sandstone ashlar, with the basement finished in droved stone. The entrance platts extend over the basement, and there is a banded base course along with band courses at the first and second floors. The ground floor has a moulded cill course, while the canted bays have moulded cornices at the first and second floors. The eaves are corniced, and the doorways are corniced with large foliate console brackets, rectangular fanlights, and narrow sidelights. The doors are predominantly timber, consisting of two leaves with six panels each. The first-floor windows have moulded architraves, and the second-floor windows have bracketed cills.

The north elevation features roughly three bays, with a full-height three-light canted bay on the eastern side. The wall is made of coursed random rubble, with sandstone ashlar used for the canted bay and some ashlar cills, lintels, and rybats. It also has a banded base course and band courses at the first and second floors, along with a corniced eaves course. There is a single window on the eastern side at the ground and second floors with ashlar surrounds, and the canted bays have moulded architraved surrounds.

The southeast elevation also has roughly three bays, constructed of coursed random rubble with sandstone ashlar quoins on the western side. There is a single window in the center at the first floor, featuring a sandstone ashlar cill and a scrolled surround at the top.

The rear (west) elevation is made of coursed squared rubble with some droved ashlar quoins, rybats, cills, and lintels. The fenestration is roughly regular, with some paired windows on the first and second floors.

Inside, the terrace has a classical interior scheme with well-detailed cornicing and some wall panels. The large entrance halls feature Corinthian pilasters, and the first-floor drawing rooms at the front contain elaborate cornicing and large marble fireplaces. The cornicing continues throughout the building, becoming less elaborate on the upper floors. Some windows have working shutters, and there have been later subdivisions made throughout the terrace in 2009.

The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The building has a mansard roof covered in grey slates, with corniced ashlar ridges and wallhead stacks topped with octagonal clay cans. It also features cast-iron rainwater goods and cast-iron railings surrounding the basement area facing the street.
