Description

19, 21, and 23 Raeburn Place in Edinburgh is a double villa likely designed by James Milne in 1814, with an early 20th-century single-storey block added to the north. The building features two mirrored houses, each with three bays, and is two storeys high with an attic. The principal elevation is constructed of tooled coursed sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the rest of the building is made from sandstone rubble. It has long and short quoins, an eaves cornice, and an eaves blocking course.

The north (principal) elevation is nearly symmetrical, but the ground floor is obscured by modern single-storey retail units that have predominantly modern shopfronts. The first floor has regular fenestration, and there is a four-light rectangular dormer on the right side of the attic floor, along with modern and two-pane skylights in the center and left of the attic. A stair leads to the first-floor entrance on the left, with a gateway on the right.

The east and west elevations are gabled. The north elevation was not visible in 1999. The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a lead ridge, with stone skews and coped gablehead stacks that have circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron. The interior was not seen in 1999.
