3 Learmonth Terrace, Edinburgh

2 Learmonth Terrace in Edinburgh, designed by John Chesser in 1874, is a three-storey townhouse terrace built in the Free Renaissance style, with a prominent two-storey, four-light canted bay on each unit. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with a droved finish at the basement level, and is set into a slope that falls to the northeast. The entrance platts extend over the basement, and there is a banded base course along with banded cill courses at the first and second floors, which are moulded to fit the canted bays. The eaves are corniced, and the main doorways feature round arched surrounds that are keystoned and corniced, supported by moulded console brackets. Above the doorways are semicircular fanlights with narrow sidelights. The windows in the canted bay at the ground and first floors have moulded architraves, while the first-floor windows are moulded, bracketed, and corniced, with advanced bracketed cills. The second-floor windows also have moulded architraves and feature a tripartite design above the canted bay, with advanced bracketed cills. Notably, there is a later rectangular tile-hung dormer added to No. 2.

The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and the pitched roof is covered with grey slates. The gable end and ridge stacks are made of corniced ashlar, topped with modern clay cans, and the property has cast-iron rainwater goods. Cast-iron railings enclose the basement area along the street.

Inside, the building is characterized by a highly decorative classical scheme, featuring intricate cornices. The large entrance vestibules have deep cornices and tiled floors, with predominantly timber stairs that include carved newel posts. These stairs are topped by large cupolas adorned with decorative plasterwork. The ground and first-floor drawing rooms boast highly decorative plasterwork and some large marble fire surrounds. The terrace underwent a conversion to flats in 2009.
