Description

16 Cramond Village in Edinburgh is a terrace of four plain vernacular houses built around 1780 to 1790 and later recast and converted by Ian Lindsay & Partners between 1959 and 1961. The two-storey houses step down towards the sea and are predominantly three bays wide, with No 9 featuring four bays and a single pend entry to the ground in the outer right bay. The buildings have a rectangular plan with a near-symmetrical arrangement of openings, finished with whitewashed harl, a continuous eaves course, painted surrounds to the openings, boarded timber doors, and plain surrounds at the rear with projecting cills.

The entrance elevation features single doors to each property, with the door for No 9 offset to the left of centre. The remaining bays are regularly fenestrated on both floors. The rear elevation has a sloping whitewashed rubble wall that separates Nos 7 and 8 from the others. It includes single doors in the central bays and asymmetrically disposed single windows on both floors, with some having painted surrounds while others are plain with projecting cills.

The houses have 12-pane timber sash and case windows on both elevations. The roofs are made of machine-made red pantiles with raised skews, and each property features harled apex stacks, precast concrete copes, circular cans, and a single harled ridge stack at the centre of No 9, topped with a concrete cope and a single terracotta can. The interiors were not seen in 1996.
