Description

10 Randolph Crescent, Edinburgh, was designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1822. It is a three-storey building with an attic and basement, constructed as a 26-bay, polished ashlar sandstone classical terrace with a concave curved frontage. The terrace is composed of an 18-bay linking section flanked by four-bay end pavilions, featuring Doric pilasters. The building has ashlar steps and entrance platts that overhang the basement, while the principal floor level uses V-jointed ashlar. Flagstone basement wells are present, featuring predominantly timber-boarded cellar doors.

The southeast elevation of the linking terrace contains panelled timber doors and rectilinear fanlights in every third bay, beginning from the left at principal floor level. The remaining bays have regular fenestration at the principal floor and above. The first floor features architraved windows with cornices, while the 1st floor windows are fitted with anthemion and palmette cast-iron window guards, with a single spanning window guard at No. 13. A cill course and architraves are present at the second floor, followed by a cornice and blocking course at the attic. Three regularly spaced gabletted dormerheads break the eaves at No. 13, alongside piended dormers at Nos. 14 and 15.

The end pavilion on the right has a multi-panel glazed timber door and a radial semicircular fanlight at No. 9. The principal floor features round-arched windows, with blind windows on the outer right at the 1st and 2nd floors and attic. The building returns to the southeast elevation and connects with 19 Great Stuart Street (listed separately, LB28967).

The end pavilion on the left includes a panelled timber door with a rectangular fanlight surmounted by a semicircular fanlight at No. 16. Round-arched windows are present on the principal floor. The door to No. 17 Randolph Crescent is centrally located on the principal floor of the five-bay southwest elevation, facing Randolph Cliff, and is accessed via a stone forestair with a vase balustrade, supported by four ornate scrolled brackets; the entrance to No. 1 Randolph Cliff is directly below. To the outer left bay is the entrance to No. 1A Randolph Cliff, with a console and pediment surround.

The terrace features a mix of plate-glass, 6-pane, and 15-pane timber sash and case windows, grey slate roofs, and cast-iron rainwater goods. Chimney stacks are coped with circular cans; ridge stacks are located on the central terrace, while stacks are set in the roof pitch of the end pavilions.

The interiors were not inspected in 1998, but evidence suggests the presence of working panelled shutters.

The building is surrounded by ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with decorative balusters and finials.
