Description

10, 11, 12, 13 Drumsheugh Street in Edinburgh is an Italianate tenement and shops designed by John Watherston and Sons, built between 1880 and 1881. This four-storey building features a mansard attic in the central pavilion and is angled around the corner. The façade is constructed from sandstone ashlar, with painted ashlar and timber and metal shopfronts. The centrepiece and terminal bays are accentuated by channelled ashlar pilasters.

At the ground floor, large consoles support the centre and outer bays, which have a dentilled fascia and arched, consoled doorpieces. The first, second, and third floors each have four-light canted bays in the centre and terminal bays, with moulded cill courses. The first-floor windows are round arched and have triangular pediments, while the second-floor windows are corniced and feature decorative entablatures and brackets. The third-floor windows have shouldered architraves and small roundels above alternating window heads. The centre section is topped with a balustrade that is interrupted by three pedimented and finalled ashlar dormers.

The ground floor shopfronts are predominantly made of plate glass, some set in timber frames and others in metal frames. The tenement features timber sash and case windows, also predominantly with plate glass. The roof has a steep double pitch M-section for the centre section and a shallower double pitch M-section for the flanking blocks, covered with grey slates. The building is finished with corniced ashlar ridge and gable end stacks, modern clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
