123 Lower Granton Road, Edinburgh

This is a mid-19th century terrace of 59 bays, arranged in a long, curved layout across five sections. The terrace comprises 17 two-bay and 7 three-bay cottages, along with two tenement blocks, with each section distinguished by its coping along the gable of the dividing wall. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and while most of the facades retain their original appearance, some properties have been painted in various colours: brown (Nos 119-121, 133, 137, 140, 141 and 144), red (Nos 132, 138, 142 and 143), and mauve (No 126). All windows have stone sills.

The north (principal) elevation features a sequence of cottages and tenement sections, with varying arrangements of entrances and windows. The earlier cottages have a central entrance flanked by windows on the ground floor, and two windows above. Section 125 incorporates a small cottage with an entrance and window inserted into a former arched opening. The alternating reversed plans of several cottages create a rhythm to the facade. Most doors have rectangular fanlights, although replacements are common; some earlier boarded doors survive at Nos 124 and 129. A small cupola sits centrally on the ridge above the tenement section. Visible remnants of four cast-iron bootscrapers remain within brick recesses at several locations along the terrace.

The south (rear) elevation includes single-storey extensions applied to most of the cottages, dating from various periods and featuring different designs. The rear of the tenement blocks (Nos 141 and 142) has a two-storey wing with a gablehead stack, further extensions that progressively reduce in height, a two-storey piended section within the re-entrant angle, and a single-storey piended extension to the south.

The west elevation abuts a brick cottage at 145 Lower Granton Road. The east elevation is blank and harled.

Original 12-pane timber sash and case windows remain at Nos 122, 131, 132, 134, 135, 138, 142, and in some instances at Nos 140 and 141; many windows have been replaced with modern alternatives. The roof is covered in grey slate and features 16 brick ridge stacks, incorporating stone coping and situated above the dividing walls between properties, along with a gable end stack to the east. A small brick stack is centrally positioned on the front pitch of No 144. The interiors were not inspected in 1997.
