Description

9, 11, and 13 Cheyne Street in Edinburgh were built around 1826-1827. This terrace block consists of three and four-storey buildings with a main door and a common stair, but it does not have basement areas. The exterior features astylar droved ashlar stone, with some areas having polished ashlar below the first-floor windows. The main cornice and blocking course are stepped at the center over the four-storey blocks, creating a near-symmetrical design with four-storey center and end blocks connected by three-storey links. The four-storey block at the northern end has been replaced by a Victorian tenement.

The building has an off-centre, four-storey facade with three windows and a pilastered common stair entrance facing Cheyne Street. The elevation along Dean Street has four windows and originally included shops, which are now domestic spaces. The pairs of three-storey blocks at numbers 3-7 and 9-13 each have two pilastered main doors and a central plain doorway leading to common stairs, with each block being seven windows wide. Numbers 15-19 feature a four-storey, seven-window design with two main doors and a central common stair, while numbers 21-25 have a similar seven-window layout as numbers 3-7. Finally, numbers 27-31 are similar but have doors alternated with windows, not grouped centrally like the others.
