Description
This is an early 19th-century corner block of four tenements, located on Queen Charlotte Street and Constitution Street in Edinburgh. The building is three stories tall and extends sixteen bays in total. It originally included shops at ground floor level.
The building is constructed primarily of cream sandstone, with polished ashlar facing the ground floor (except on the southeast elevation); stugged ashlar above with polished dressings; coursed and squared rubble on the northwest side; and coursed pink rubble at the rear of numbers 29-36 and 38-42. The ground floor is rusticated, with a band course above it. A fluted frieze with decorative elements called paterae sits above the first floor, and a dentilled eaves cornice finishes the building.
The northeast elevation, facing Queen Charlotte Street, is composed of the outer four bays, which are divided by shallow, projecting pilasters featuring stylized acanthus capitals and paterae in the frieze. The fenestration above the ground floor is regular. There is a shopfront on the outer right, featuring plain bipartite windows and a dentilled cornice that curves around the corner. A doorway provides access to the common stair, and two plain timber shopfronts flank another doorway to the common stair and a single window. An elaborate arcaded shopfront turns the northeast corner, featuring round-arched, bipartite display windows with slender colonnette mullions and foliate capitals, ornate corbels dividing a continuous fascia, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course with round-headed and carved detailing. Remains of decorative cast-iron brattishing are also present, along with a curved corner window and a recessed doorway. Seven dormers, some with two windows and others with three, mostly have piended roofs.
The southeast elevation, facing Constitution Street, has four bays. A deep-set, round-arched doorway with a keystone is located to the left of the center, with a window to the outer left bay. A round-arched shopfront sits on the right bays (as described above). Single windows are positioned on the first and second floors. A gabled section is centrally located, featuring a single window and an apex stack. A rectangular dormer is to the left.
The northwest elevation is gabled with a broad apex stack. There are two bipartite windows to the left, and a corniced and consoled doorway with a single window to the right. Single windows are interspersed on the outer bays at the first and second floors, though one is now blocked.
The rear southwest elevation features projecting curved stairwells.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes and plate glass glazing. The roof is grey slate, piend and flat, with lead flashings. Two apex stacks are present, along with coped mutual stacks.
The interior of the building was not inspected in 1993.
