Description

3 Lockerby Cottages, located on Lasswade Road in Edinburgh, were designed by McWhannel & Rogerson and built between 1892 and 1894. This group consists of 16 semi-detached, single-storey cottages with attics, featuring two distinct designs. The cottages are set back from the main road, screened by high walls, and accessed through a gateway with gatepiers and a pedestrian gate.

The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked cream rock-faced sandstone, accented with contrasting red sandstone dressings. They have timber sash and case windows, with an 8-pane upper sash and plate glass in the lower sash.

The two designs alternate along the street. The first design, found in pairs at Nos. 1 & 3, 2 & 4, 9 & 11, and 10 & 12, features two-bay cottages with timber boarded doors at the center and single windows in the outer bays on the ground floor. The first floor has two small windows grouped at the center, with small bipartite windows in the outer bays that break the eaves, topped with gabled dormerheads.

The second design, seen at Nos. 5 & 7, 6 & 8, 14 & 16, and 13 & 15, also consists of two-bay cottages with timber boarded doors at the center. These have bipartite windows in the outer bays and two small windows grouped at the center of the attic floor, breaking the eaves with a single catslide dormer. The outer bays feature windows that break the eaves in red sandstone dormerheads, adorned with pointed-arched pediments and blank raised panels in the tympanum.

Each cottage has a single window in the gable at the first floor at the rear. The roofs are covered with grey-green slates and red ridge tiles, featuring ashlar coped skews and skewputts, as well as ashlar coped stacks with simple cans. Each property is enclosed by a low garden wall made of red sandstone, which is stepped to follow the street gradient and includes some original cast and wrought-iron gates in the Arts & Crafts style.

A prominent ashlar coped rubble screen wall borders the main road, featuring tall ashlar square gatepiers topped with ball-finials, and a flat-arched pedestrian gateway to the north.
