Description

19 Lansdowne Crescent is a terrace of rusticated townhouses constructed in 1865 by Robert Matheson, with corner pavilions at numbers 12 and 21. Numbers 12 and 24 Grosvenor Street form a corner, while numbers 21 and 9 Rosebery Crescent also form a corner and are listed separately. The building is constructed of coursed, polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings and V-jointed rustication to the ground floor of the main block; droved sandstone is used at basement level.

The main elevation features a symmetrical design of 24 bays, divided into eight sections of three bays each, connected by two corner pavilions. The corner pavilion at number 12 is advanced and five bays wide, with a timber door and fanlight, flanked by windows. Steps lead from the street to the right. The main block has basement entrances with rectangular fanlights, ground floor entrances with four-panel timber doors (some part-glazed) and rectangular fanlights, and windows to all remaining bays on the ground and first floors. A corner pavilion at number 21 is also slightly advanced, featuring a basement door and fanlight to the right of an oversailing section and regular fenestration above.

The side elevation of number 21 is four bays wide and regularly fenestrated at all floors, including two closely spaced windows in the centre. The building has a grey slate roof, piended to the corner pavilions, and features polished, coped sandstone ashlar mutual and wallhead stacks, with cylindrical cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present. Fleur-de-lys iron railings are set within ashlar copes, along with ashlar steps and oversailing entrance platts; plain railings run along the basement steps. The windows are timber sash and case with two panes.
