Description

11, 13, 15 Cornwall Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey, attic and basement tenement block built between 1868 and 1870 by Sir James Gowans. This five-bay building features a mansard roof and is constructed from polished ashlar stone. It has string courses that divide the floors and stone bracketed eaves. The windows have decorative bracketed surrounds, and the steeply-pitched gabled dormers in the three central bays showcase stone bracketed eaves, with the date of construction, the architect's name, and a heraldic device displayed in the gables. The outer bays feature smaller hooded dormers.

Access to the building is via stone steps and platts that arch over the basement area, located at the center and outer bays. The central entrance has a timber panelled door set within a hooded Serliana, while the outer bays have timber panelled doors with round-arched fanlights, framed by round-arched glazed doorpieces with flanking sidelights and serrated carved decoration in the spandrels. The intervening bays contain tripartite windows with decorative stone mullions on the ground, first, and second floors. The first-floor windows are shoulder-arched with serrated Moorish carving, and the second-floor windows are round-arched, positioned below the dormers and pushing up against the bracketed eaves.

The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates. A moulded stone ridge runs along the top. The fluted ashlar stalks have scalloped, bracketed cornices, and decorative octagonal cans with serrated tops.

The property is enclosed by a boundary wall topped with decorative cast-iron railings and stone piers that mark the entrances.
