Description

8 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh

This is a Grade A listed building, part of a monumental classical terrace designed by Thomas Bonnar and built between 1819 and 1832. The terrace is predominantly three storeys with a basement and features a distinctive concave curved frontage spanning 34 bays. It comprises a central 24-bay linking terrace flanked by two advanced terminal pavilions: a four-storey pavilion to the left (Nos 1 and 2) and a three-storey pavilion to the right (No 11).

The building is constructed in polished ashlar sandstone. The principal floor features V-jointed rustication, while the basement displays rock-faced rustication. The facades are articulated with base courses, band courses between floors, corniced friezes at impost level on the terminal pavilions, cill courses at the upper floors, and cornices with blocking courses at the second floor level. Ashlar steps and entrance platforms project over the basement.

On the principal (north-east) elevation, the linking terrace contains eight three-bay houses. The main floor features panelled timber doors with an assortment of plate glass, umbrella, and radial rectangular fanlights in bays to the left, with regular fenestration in the remaining bays at this level and consistent window patterns on the upper floors and basement. The flagged basement area extends beneath.

The left terminal pavilion (Nos 1 and 2) is a seven-bay composition with three bays advanced at the centre. Ionic pilasters frame the bays at the first and second floors, while panelled pilasters appear at the third floor. Four-panel timber doors with radial semicircular fanlights occupy bays flanking the centre. Windows at the principal floor are set in round-arched recesses. The first-floor windows are architraved with cornices; the windows flanking the centre are corniced with consoles, while a centred window sports a pediment with consoles. Blind balustered aprons occupy the three central bays at the first floor, with simpler blind aprons in the remaining bays.

The right terminal pavilion (No 11) is a three-bay structure with Doric pilasters flanking the bays at the first and second floors. A four-panel timber door with radial semicircular fanlight appears in the left bay at principal floor level, while the remaining bays contain windows set in round-arched recesses with etched designs to the lower sashes. A blank three-bay gable faces north-west with infilled windows at all floors and a coped rubble wall adjoining at the rear.

The windows throughout are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. Anthemion and palmette window guards embellish the first-floor bays at No 8. The roofs are of grey slate in M-section, with paired slate-hung box dormers at No 9 and a piended slate-hung box dormer at No 10. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout. Ridge and wallhead stacks are of broached ashlar or rendered material, mostly corniced with circular cans.

The entrance halls of Nos 3 to 7 feature pendentive ceilings and screens with fluted Doric columns. The entrance hall of No 8 contains Gothic rib-vaulting. Working panelled shutters are evident in the interior.

The building is fronted by ashlar copings surmounted by cast-iron railings featuring spear-headed balusters and urn finials.

The southern return to Mansfield Place forms part of a separate listing covering 9 and 10 Mansfield Place.
