Description

This is a terrace of eight two-story houses located at 21 Nile Grove, Morningside, Edinburgh. The houses were designed by George Washington Browne (Wardrop Anderson P Browne) and construction began by 1884. They are built in a Queen Anne style, with rear brick projections.

The houses are constructed from cream sandstone, with squared and snecked rubble to the front and sides, ashlar dressings, and stugged rubble at the rear and sides. The reveals are chamfered, and the canted bays have swagged parapets, while numbers 19 and 23 feature plain panelled parapets.

The southern (front) elevation shows paired elevations from numbers 9 to 15, mirrored around the central point. The entrances are linked by a cornice to the central bays, and feature rounded arrises, rectangular fanlights containing small leaded panes, semi-circular pediments, and panelled doors leading to tiled vestibules. Single, pedimented windows break the eaves at the first floor level. The bay to the left of the elevation has a canted window at ground floor and a bipartite window at first floor, also breaking the eaves, with an open scrolled semi-circular pediment. The bay to the right has an advanced bipartite window at ground floor, with panelled and swagged aprons to the first floor bipartite windows, a swept and swagged frieze, and a triangular pediment. Numbers 17 to 23 follow a similar design pattern, but with the canted windows to the right bay and the advanced bipartite windows to the left bay.

The eastern elevation is gabled, with a corniced apex stack. It features a slightly advanced bipartite window at ground floor to the right bay, and a single window at the first floor above. Single windows are present at both ground and first floor levels on the left. The gablehead contains a keystoned bull’s-eye window.

The western elevation is also gabled, with a full-height apex stack, rebuilt above eaves level. There is a single window at ground floor to the left, and a keystoned bull's-eye window in the gablehead.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 8-pane or 6-pane upper sashes and 2-pane or plate glass lower sashes. The roofs are slate covered, with red ridge tiles, two apex stacks, corniced mutual stacks, and tall, tapering cans. Decorative scrolled skewputts are present. The eaves have moulded gutters and ornamental gutterheads.

The interior of the houses was not inspected in 1992.

The property includes tall rubble boundary walls with semi-circular coping to the rear and sides, shouldered end piers with segmental-arched pediments, and a low rubble wall to the front with saddleback coping. Some later cast-iron ornamental gates and railings are present, with only number 9 being complete.
