Description

11 Drummond Place, Edinburgh is a near-symmetrical terrace built in 1804 by Robert Reid and William Sibbald, with design alterations made by Thomas Bonnar in 1818. The terrace consists of 17 bays, incorporating a 3-storey and basement, 6-bay linking block between a 4-storey and basement, 5-bay terminal pavilion to the north and a 4-storey and basement, 6-bay terminal pavilion to the south. The building is constructed from polished ashlar sandstone with V-jointed rustication and rock-faced stone at basement level. The design incorporates a base course at the principal and first floors, a cill course at the first and second floors of the linking block, a cornice and blocking course at the second floor of the linking block, a cornice at the second floors of the terminal pavilions, and a cornice and blocking course at the third floors of the terminal pavilions. A corniced frieze is present at the impost level of the terminal pavilions. Ashlar steps and entrance platts overhang the basement.

The east (principal) elevation of the linking block features a pair of doors in the central bays at principal floor, with a plate glass rectangular fanlight to the right and a radial rectangular fanlight to the left. Windows are present in the remaining bays at the principal floor, with regular fenestration to the floors above. A flagged basement area is present with rubble walls.

The north terminal pavilion connects to the east terminal pavilion of 3-41 Great King Street, which is listed separately.

The south terminal pavilion has a bay to the outer left slightly recessed. It features round-arched doorpieces in bays to the right of centre, with a plate glass semicircular fanlight, and to the outer left, with a radial semicircular fanlight, at principal floor. Windows are located in the round-arched recesses on the principal floor, with regular fenestration to the floors above. Ionic pilasters flank the bays at the first and second floors, while panelled pilasters flank the bays at the third floor. Blank aprons are present below the first-floor windows, with an exception at the outer left. A flagged basement area is present with rubble walls. The south elevation is partially obscured by an adjoining terrace at 24-28 Nelson Street, which is listed separately.

Predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case windows are found in the south terminal pavilion, while the linking block has plate glass sash and case windows. The basement doors are predominantly 6-panel, flush-beaded timber. The roof is covered in grey slate with cast-iron rainwater goods. The building also features a broached ridge stack with ashlar skews, shouldered wallhead stacks, coped with circular cans.

Interior inspection was not possible in 1997, but there is some evidence of working panelled shutters.

Ashlar copes support cast-iron railings with spear-headed balusters and urn finials. Railing-mounted lamps are fitted with glass globes.
