Description

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, located on Queensferry Road in Edinburgh, was designed by John Henderson and built between 1837 and 1838, with a later sanctuary added in 1900 by John Robertson. In 1957, the church was converted into an electricity substation. This Neo-perpendicular Gothic church features a rectangular plan and is prominently situated at the northern end of the Dean Bridge.

The structure has a three-stage pinnacled lancet tower and consists of five bays with an arcaded basement on the south side. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and includes an advanced banded base course and a moulded cill course. The moulded eaves course is topped by a blank parapet. Each bay is supported by stepped buttresses that are set back at the corners, extending above the parapet as triangular finials over a moulded cornice, which is adorned with a thistle motif.

Tall pointed arched windows with recessed chamfered surrounds are present in each bay, featuring hoodmoulds and timber tracery. There is a later addition on the right (west) side, which has a lower wallhead and a small central gable. A painted clock face is located on the east side beneath paired lancet windows on the third stage of the tower. The church also contains notable stained-glass windows by James Ballantine, dating from around the 1860s, and by Henry Holiday, from around 1900.
