Description

This is a substantial classical terrace of 11 bays, flanked by two advanced pavilions, likely designed by Thomas Bonnar and built around 1820. The central terrace is three storeys and a basement in height, while the flanking pavilions are four storeys and a basement. The building is constructed from polished ashlar sandstone, with V-jointed rustication at the principal floor and broached ashlar at the basement. A base course, band courses, and elaborate cornices define the elevations. Ashlar steps and entrance platts project from the basement level.

On the east (principal) elevation, the central terrace features a 4-panel timber stair door with a plate glass fanlight at the principal floor, and similarly decorated 4-panel timber doors at the third bays from each outer side. The remaining bays have windows. Regular fenestration is present on the upper floors and basement. A flagged basement area is visible.

The terminal pavilions have giant order Doric pilasters at the first and second floors, and panelled pilasters at the third floor. The pavilion on the left (Nos 1-3) has a 6-panel timber stair door with an umbrella-shaped fanlight and windows in round-arched recesses, with mirrored entrances at the basement level. The pavilion on the right (Nos 9 and 10) features an advanced flat-roofed porch with a corniced frieze and a vertically-boarded timber door. The London Street return, linking to 36 London Street, presents a five-bay facade, and the Bellevue Crescent return, linking to 1 and 2 Bellevue Crescent, is seven bays wide.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. Grey slate covers the roofs, with recessed polygonal piended dormers at numbers 4 and 8, and modern skylights at number 5. Cast-iron rainwater goods are in place. Ridges and wallhead stacks are finished in broached ashlar and render, with decorative circular cans.

Interiors were unexamined in 1998, but evidence suggests working panelled shutters and pendentived entrance halls. No 2 retains wall decorations dating to 1826. The site is enclosed by ashlar copes surmounted by cast-iron railings with spear-headed and urn finials.
