Torphichen Police Station, 3-5 And 7-9 Torphichen Place, Edinburgh

Torphichen Police Station, located at 3-5 and 7-9 Torphichen Place in Edinburgh, was designed by Robert Morham and completed in 1908. This three-storey building features a nine-bay palazzo-style classical design, with chamfered end bays and a three-bay front facing Dewar Place Lane, creating a courtyard at the rear.

The exterior is constructed of stugged squared and snecked sandstone ashlar, with banded rock-faced V-jointed rustication on the ground floor. Polished quoins are present at the upper floor angles, and the second-floor windows have long and short surrounds. Architectural details include a base course, a cornice at lintel level on the ground floor, a band course between the ground and first floors, a cill course for the first-floor windows, and bracketed cills for the second-floor windows. The building features a cornice and a coped parapet with piers marking the bays. The central section has a segmental head inscribed with 'District Police Station' and medallions on the chamfered bays inscribed with '1908'. The ground floor has recessed round-headed openings, while the upper floors have architraves, with lugged and corniced details at the first floor.

The principal elevation is nearly symmetrical, featuring a recessed architraved doorway in the central bay and the third bay from the right at ground level. Above the doorway is a moulded round-arched fanlight, with a four-panelled timber door below. To the left, there are ashlar steps leading to a deep-set main entrance with a multi-paned round-arched fanlight. The remaining ground floor bays have round-arched windows and a boarded doorway on the outer right. The upper floors exhibit regular fenestration.

On the south elevation facing Dewar Place Lane, there are round-arched windows in the flanking bays at ground level and a blocked opening in the center. A modern glazed passage spans the road to 11 Torphichen Place to the left of center on the first floor, with a lugged and corniced window to the right of the passage and a tripartite window in the center of the second floor.

The northeast elevation is obscured by an adjoining building, and the east elevation was not visible in 2000. The timber-framed windows display varied glazing patterns, predominantly featuring seven-pane sash and case designs on the upper floors. The roof was not seen, but there are corniced sandstone ashlar stacks at the wallhead on Dewar Place Lane, with assorted cylindrical cans, and painted cast-iron rainwater goods.
