48 Mayfield Road, Edinburgh

50 Mayfield Road in Edinburgh is a two-storey villa built around 1877, with an additional villa at No. 48 added by 1893. This terrace consists of four non-symmetrical villas designed around a common theme. Nos. 50, 52, and 54 are two bays wide, while No. 48 is three bays wide. The buildings are constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble, featuring polished ashlar on the principal east elevation.

Architectural details include a base course, a dividing band between the ground and first floors, and eaves courses. The first-floor windows have raised and shaped surrounds, and each villa boasts a full-height canted window topped with a parapet that has semi-circular cresting and blinded oculi. The entrances are framed by pilastered doorpieces with carved floreate brackets, except for No. 48, which has plain brackets. The entablature features stylized caps and a cornice, with each entrance leading to a two-leaf panelled door topped with plate glass fanlights.

The windows are mainly four-pane sash and case. The piended roof is covered with grey slates and has dividing coping between each villa. There are three corniced ridge chimney stacks and two shouldered wallhead chimney stacks, which are rendered and lined on the south side. A later box dormer is located next to the chimney stack on the south gable, and the cast iron gutters have a moulded profile.

The property is enclosed by a low coped rubble boundary wall at the front and taller stone walls on the sides. The interiors were not seen in 1990.
