Description

22 St Bernard's Crescent in Edinburgh is a symmetrical terrace of townhouses built between 1879 and 1882 by John Webster. The two-storey homes, which also have a basement and attic, feature prominent full-height canted bays and are set on a slope that falls to the east. The exterior is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with the ground floor channelled. Each townhouse has entrance platts that oversail the basement area recess leading to the street. The design includes a banded base course, a band course at the first floor, and a corniced eaves course. The doorways are inset, with panelled timber doors and plain rectangular fanlights. The attic features tile-hung piend roofed dormers, which are bi-partite and flanked by tri-partite windows.

The south (rear) elevation is made of coursed squared rubble with tooled ashlar rybats, lintels, and cills, displaying roughly regular fenestration. The windows are fitted with plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The pitched roof is covered with grey slates, and there are corniced ashlar ridge stacks with some clay cans. The property has cast-iron rainwater goods and cast-iron railings that edge the basement area recess to the street, incorporating decorative lamp standards with large bowl shades.

Inside, as seen in a selection of interiors in 2010, there is a decorative classical scheme characterized by intricate plasterwork, large drawing rooms, and stone stairs with well-detailed balustrades topped by large cupolas. Some of the townhouses have been later converted into flats.
