Ear Nose And Throat Pavilion, Royal Infirmary, Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

The General Royal Infirmary on Lauriston Place in Edinburgh was designed by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson in 1900, with later alterations and additions. It consists of two similar three-storey and attic blocks in the 'Old Flemish' style, with the southern block originally serving as the Ear, Nose and Throat department and the northern block as the Ophthalmic department. These two parallel blocks run east-west and feature gable ends, with splayed corner towers flanking the gables at each end. In the center of each block, there is a four-storey gabled block with engaged polygonal corner turrets topped with faceted conical roofs.

The building is constructed from bull-faced coursed cream sandstone sourced from Hailes quarry, with ashlar dressings. A moulded band separates the second and third floors, and decorative lanterns or ventilators are located at the center and ends of each block. The windows have chamfered reveals, and the splayed corner towers feature narrow transomed windows at the ground level, mullioned and transomed bipartite windows on the first floor, and mullioned bipartites with segmental pediments on the second floor, topped with key-blocked circular windows in the gables.

On the northeast elevation, the entrance is located in the advanced crow-stepped center block, featuring a two-leaf timber outer door and a glazed inner door within a pedimented porch, which has urns at the corners (one urn is missing). This entrance is flanked by glazed porches and single-storey polygonal towers with ball-finialled crenellation, and there are wallhead stacks above. The linking blocks are regularly fenestrated.

The east elevation showcases a three-bay crow-stepped gabled center block with a gablehead chimney stalk (polygonal on the southern block) and a high arch at the third-floor level. There are modern balconies and infill at the ground floor. The splayed polygonal corner towers feature mannered gables linked by a parapet.

The south elevation has an advanced center block with a crow-stepped gabled center bay, which includes mullioned and transomed tripartite windows on the first and second floors, with hoodmoulds on the first floor and arch-headed windows on the second floor. Some original small-pane glazing remains in the smaller sash and case windows, and some transomed windows in the wards still have top hoppers with sash and case below. The roof is covered with grey slates.
