Description
17 Queen Street in Edinburgh is a classical tenement building dating from around 1785, featuring alterations at the basement level. It stands three storeys high on a raised basement with an attic, located on a corner site that includes shops at the basement. The exterior is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished ashlar detailing, and it showcases long and short quoins.
On the Queen Street elevation, the building has a four-bay layout with a canted piend-roofed dormer on the right. The Hanover Street elevation is irregular, with three bays on the right and a two-bay wing to the left. The inner bays feature a pair of architraved doorcases that are deeply set within a square-cut rusticated surround topped with a cornice. The doors are panelled, with an 8-pane fanlight to the left and plate glass to the right. The wing includes two piend-roofed dormers, with the left one being canted.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case, with variations including plate glass, 4-pane, and 12-pane styles. The building has ashlar coped skews and rendered stacks.
Inside, the main door at No 118 leads to a flat with a pilastered inner arched doorway and a fanlight, along with stairs descending to the basement, where the chimneypieces have been removed. The first and second floor flats are divided, featuring a Dining Room and Drawing Rooms that face Queen Street. The Drawing Room on the second floor includes a grey marble chimneypiece, while the Dining Room has a black slate chimneypiece. There is also a single flat in the attic.
The property is complemented by cast-iron spearhead railings along Hanover Street.
