11 Mayfield Gardens, Edinburgh

9 Mayfield Gardens is a classical terrace building designed by David Cousin in 1862. It features two storeys and an attic, with three-storey advanced terminal blocks, and consists of 33 bays arranged in a near-symmetrical layout on a sloping site. The building is constructed from lightly stugged cream sandstone ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear. Architectural details include a base course, cill courses for the first and second floor windows, architraves for all windows and pedimented dormers, a cornice, and a blocking course.

The west elevation facing Mayfield Gardens has a three-storey block to the north with six bays, featuring doorways in the two central bays. To the left is a two-leaf boarded door, and to the right is a panelled door, both with plate glass fanlights above. There are corbelled cornices above the panelled doorpieces to the south, along with a cast-iron window guard. The first floor has single windows above, with single windows in all floors of the flanking bays. The three-storey block to the south also has six bays, with a doorway to the left of centre, a panelled door, and a plate glass fanlight above, along with a corbelled cornice to the panelled doorpiece. Regular fenestration continues throughout. The two-storey terrace comprises seven houses arranged in three bays, with doorways on the outer left, panelled doors, plate glass fanlights, corbelled cornices above the panelled doorpieces, and single windows on the first floor above, maintaining regular fenestration.

The south elevation facing Peel Terrace features a three-storey and basement structure with three bays, a central doorway with a panelled door and plate glass fanlight, and a corbelled cornice above the panelled doorpiece. There are single windows in the flanking bays and on the first floor above.

The north elevation, facing East Mayfield, is three storeys high with three bays, also featuring a central doorway with a panelled door and plate glass fanlight, and a corbelled cornice above. The first and second floors have bipartite windows, while the ground floor has carved niches in the flanking bays, with single windows above.

The building predominantly has two-pane and some four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, featuring piended and platformed designs, tall coped ridge stacks, and a central wallhead stack on the north block with a balustrade.

The interiors were not seen in 1996. The property is bordered by a low coped boundary wall along the street, with some original railings to the south.
