Description

23 Wardie Square in Edinburgh is a single-storey building with attics, constructed around 1853. It consists of a terrace featuring two 2-bay cottages and one 3-bay cottage, which are arranged in a stepped manner as they ascend the slope. The exterior is made of brick painted white, accented with ashlar dressings. The ground floor windows have stone sills, and there are piended dormers in the attics.

On the principal elevation, the plans for Nos 21 and 22 are reversed, with entrances located to the left and right, respectively. Above the ground floor windows, there are piended dormers. The central entrance to No 23 is flanked by irregularly spaced windows, and there are also a pair of irregularly spaced piended dormers above. No 21 features a replacement four-panel timber door, while No 23 has a similar door, and No 24 has a boarded timber door. The gable ends of each cottage are finished with polished ashlar coping, indicating a change in the roofline. The pavement in front is made of small irregular cobbles with a stone kerb.

The cottages mainly feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with No 22 having 2-pane sash and case windows. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are coped gablehead stacks on the projecting dividing walls between the cottages, with the stack between Nos 22 and 23 being narrower and rendered.

The rear elevation includes single-storey flat-roofed extensions for each cottage. The south elevation has a blank coped gable end, while the north elevation adjoins 119 Lower Granton Road. The interiors were not inspected in 1997.
