Description

11 Douglas Crescent in Edinburgh is a three-storey building with a basement, consisting of three houses designed by John Chesser between 1875 and 1879, with an attic storey added by Dunn and Findlay in 1899. The exterior is made of polished, channelled sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, while the basement features droved sandstone. Architectural details include a base course, a band course at the ground level, and a cornice at the canted and advanced bays. There are also string courses, band courses, and cornices at the first floor.

The doorpieces are notable for their stop-chamfered pilasters and foliate consoles supporting the cornice, along with margin-paned panelled timber doors that have rectangular fanlights above. The windows above the doorpieces are framed with block cills and consoled cornices.

On the north (front) elevation, each house features an advanced bay on the left and a canted bay on the right. The basement has a door and fanlight in the centre, beneath an entrance platt, with a bipartite window to the left and a three-light window in the canted bay on the right. The ground floor has a doorpiece in the centre and single windows above, while the left bay has bipartite windows on all floors, and the right bay features three-light canted bays on all floors.

The glazing consists of two-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is concealed, and there are coped, channelled sandstone ashlar mutual stacks with tall cans, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

The property is complemented by spike-headed railings along the street, which are set into the coping, as well as railings leading to the ashlar steps and entrance platts.
