Description

28 Stafford Street in Edinburgh is a terrace of classical townhouses, likely designed by Robert Brown around 1819 to 1824. The building features two and three-storey attics and basements, with basements only on the right side. At the southern corner, there is a three-bay block with a prominent, pedimented center bay. The ground floor on the left has a later timber shop front. Various dormers from the late 19th century can be seen on the attic, including slate-hung box dormers on No. 309 and a later ashlar attic storey on No. 20.

The structure has a five-bay return to William Street, with blind windows on the right and a parapet in the center. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar, which is droved at the basement and channelled at the ground floor. The entrance platts extend over the basement, and there is a banded base course, a band course at the first floor, and a banded cill course at the first and second floors. The eaves are corniced. The doorways have plain surrounds with rectangular fanlights, some featuring geometric glazing.

The windows are predominantly 12-pane in timber sash and case, while the ground floor shop front has plate glass. The building is topped with sandstone skews and grey slates, and features a corniced ashlar gable end, ridge, and pediment apex stacks. There are cast-iron railings along the basement recess and cast-iron rainwater goods.
